Working with light weights and bands

How the Strength class uses hand weights and resistance bands, and how to choose a weight that suits the set.

A woman stands on a mat with her arms raised above her head and her palms together, in front of tall white-framed windows.

Strength is the ORVESSA class that adds resistance to Pilates principles. It uses light hand weights and resistance bands, more repetitions than a classical class, and a short stretch to finish.

Why the weights are light

The sets are slow and controlled, and each one has more repetitions than a typical gym set. A weight you could lift quickly a few times can feel heavy by the end of a slow set. Start lighter than you expect.

Choosing a weight

  • Choose a weight you can move slowly for the whole set without your shoulders lifting or your back arching.
  • If the last repetitions lose their shape, change to a lighter weight, or put the weights down and keep the movement.
  • Keep the same weight for a few weeks before you change it.

Using bands

A band gives more resistance the further it stretches. Holding it closer to the middle makes an exercise harder. Check the band for nicks or tears before you use it, and keep it away from your face as you stretch it.

Who the class suits

Strength is listed as intermediate to advanced. If you are new to Pilates, start with Mat Control or Reformer Foundations, and add Strength when the basic positions feel familiar.
